About Me

Hello and welcome!

My name is Jake Marshall and I am the Master and Commander of this blog!

The blog began as a way to keep those back home abreast of all the wonderful places we were visiting and the amazing things we were doing. It has since grown into both a travel blog as well as a space for me to put into writing some of my thoughts and feelings. As I go I also plan to add some of my other writings. What started as a blog about our traveling adventures has slowly grown into a place where I record some of the wider adventures of my life.

I am 28, male, and tall and handsome. I was born and raised in Santa Clarita California (Los Angles county). I studied Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at California Lutheran University. I graduated in 2005 with a BS in Athletic Training, a field which I have worked in consistently from 2005 until 2014. I have worked with athletes from semi-pro right on down to youth. I have worked most every sport played in the US with the exception of field hockey and equestrian related sports. I have done some work with the Special Olympics as well. I have worked in a variety of other fields including manufacturing, sales, and floral designer and delivery.

My first love and in many ways passion is books. From a very young age I have always been a huge reader, especially of Fantasy and Sci Fi. There will always be a special place in my heart for hack and slash fiction or, as a friend of mine calls it, war porn. I just love a book that is all action with a fairly simple plot. No need to get complicated. I have also read pretty much everything by Ayn Rand, though that is not to say I understood it all or agree with her views.

I will read most anything, and have recently begun delving into short fiction collections. I have also begun branching out a bit more into the non-fiction world of history, science, and philosophy. I have even managed to get through a few of the “classics” though I will be the first to admit some I just could not manage to suffer through (the first 100 pages of Moby Dick made me want to rip my eyeballs out). In other words, I am trying to refine my tastes a bit.

I am also a big fan of rugby. I can no longer play collision sports however so I stick to touch these days. Much like my reading though I’ll play most anything. I have been seen around a climbing gym or two (blame that one on my lady) as well as the golf course, volleyball court, racquetball and tennis court, and even the occasional pick up game of basket ball of football (US). I also quiet enjoy a good game of slow pitch softball. I am also an avid hiker and camper. Simply put I love the out doors.

I have made a few half hearted attempts at writing throughout my life, but this is really the first serious attempt at it. It began with the notion of writing a novel, which has stalled but I haven’t given up. Lately my efforts have been more towards short stories, a few of which will end up here eventually. While this journey lasts however, this blog will largely be about our journey.

As a huge reader there has always been a desire within me to give back in some way to the world of stories which has enchanted me for so long. This blog as well as my other writings are in many ways the first steps along the journey to making that a reality.

So, thank you for visiting my little slice of the blogosphere. Don’t hesitate to comment on a post or share your thoughts, as long as it is done in a relatively rational manner. And of course, make sure you stop back in from time to time.

Cheers!
